The Terlan Cellar:
over 100 years’ tradition of quality.

At the heart of the Terlan wine-growing region one of the first producer cooperatives in the South Tyrol was founded in 1893. At that time 24 wine growers set themselves the goal of joint production and sales marketing. Today the Terlan cellar with approx. 100 members, a cultivable area of 150 hectares and a joint annual production of 11,000 hl, ie. 1.2 million bottles, is one of the smaller operations in the province. The manageable size makes a major contribution to quality assurance. Under the expert eye of winemaker Rudi Kofler 50% red and 50% white wines mature in the modern cellar, all bearing the DOC mark (official mark of origin). Their wines are sold and marketed according to three different quality categories. Special vintages in the Terlan cellar have been stored since time immemorial in the valuable “vinotheque”, where they mature further under a constant watchful eye. Today 12,000 bottles from all years between 1955 and the present day are laid down there, some date back even earlier. The oldest bottles are from the year the cellar was founded. The fact that as early on as 1893 the 0.75 l bottle was in use, proves that right from the very start quality was of great importance in Terlan. This wine collection, which is unique in the whole of Italy, proves Terlan’s tradition of mature, enduring wines, which become more harmonious and elegant as they age. The international appearances and awards from the early years also testify to the long tradition of quality in the Terlan cellar, including participation in the Munich wine festival in 1896 and the silver medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900.
